Project Refinery was rebranded as “Generative Design in Revit” when it was officially integrated into Revit 2021. Users can access it from the Manage tab in Revit and through the “Generative Design” menu in Dynamo for Revit. This change aimed to incorporate the generative design tools directly within the Revit.
Project Refinery, an Autodesk generative design beta for the AEC industry, allows users to explore, evaluate, and optimize their Dynamo designs. It enables the creation of design options, setting goals, and optimizing based on those goals. Users can maximize or minimize designated outputs, with Refinery providing the best options. It supports the Dynamo Package Manager and custom nodes, including Python nodes, running locally on your computer and integrating custom code into design option generation. Refinery operates within Dynamo for Revit or Dynamo Sandbox and includes a node to cache Revit data for use in option generation.
Practical applications. The Refinery beta allows for several practical applications. In patterning studies, architects can use generative design to minimize the number of panels and panel areas in their surface designs in Revit. The floor area ratio study helps evaluate massing options for buildings on urban sites, optimizing for factors like the number of floors, floor area, and façade area, and assessing the designs in their urban context. The panelization study focuses on optimizing grid designs for constructability, including panel quantity, area, and size variance, resulting in more uniform panels that facilitate faster fabrication and installation.
Refinery Toolkits. The Refinery Toolkits is a collection that include two packages — the SpacePlanning Toolkit, which aids in the arrangement and optimization of spaces, and the Massing Toolkit, designed for the analysis and optimization of architectural massing in generative design workflows.
Project Fractal. Project Refinery evolved from Project Fractal, initially released in July 2016. Over 3500 users experimented with coding design logic in Dynamo and automating design option creation with Fractal. In November 2018, Project Fractal transitioned to Project Refinery, enhancing the creation of design options and adding the ability to set and optimize goals.
