Adobe Fresco is a free app specially created for digital drawing and digital painting on mobile devices and desktop computers. It provides the most realistic digital painting experience on tablets. Fresco is the app to use if you want the closest digital experience to illustrating with traditional media. It brings together the world’s largest collection of vector and raster brushes plus new live brushes that give realistic oil and watercolor effects, to deliver the most natural painting and drawing experience.

Adobe Fresco is named after “fresco” (meaning “fresh” in Italian) – a painting technique when artist uses a mixture of pigment and water to paint the image on wet plaster.

Adobe Fresco is essentially the art features in Adobe Photoshop in a dedicated app that is optimized for mobile touchscreen devices. Photoshop is an image editing app and not a dedicated art app. All the new art related features are being added to Fresco and not Photoshop.

Fresco is built for the latest stylus and touch devices. Although it is geared toward tablets (iPads, Mobile Studio Pros, and Surface Pros) it is also compatible with desktop computers. If you are a Photoshop user, Fresco will feel very familiar.

Fresco’s toolbar includes different tools: three types of brushes (pixel brushes, live brushes and vector brushes), eraser tool, smudge brush, move & transform tool, selection tools, fill tool, shape tools (stencils), text tool, eyedropper, option to import image files, color chip which will show you the currently selected color. A touch shortcut is a circle (by default in the lower left corner of your interface) that acts as a modifier to the behavior of the current tool. It is similar to the Shift key when you’re working on a device with a keyboard.

You can choose from three different brush tools: pixel brushes, live brushes, and vector brushes.

  • Pixel brushes use pixels to create brush strokes. It is the same type of graphic as in Adobe Photoshop. You can import your own brushes.
  • Live brushes offer simulated properties of oil paint and watercolor. Live brushes have a mixing feature, you can take a watercolor brush in two different colors and it’ll mix them together. Live brushes are pixel-based oil and watercolor brushes. This is simulating what the real medium could look like.
  • Vector brushes use vectors to create brush strokes. It is the same type of graphic as in Adobe Illustrator. They are point-to-point so typically there’s a flat color, it’s not pixel-based. They have solid edges and can scale to any size.

In brush tool options you can adjust the color, size, ink flow and smoothing for a brush. Each of brush tools depend on layer type that you have. You are using a pixel brush on a pixel layer, and a vector brush on a vector layer. With Layer properties you can set the name, the blend mode, and the opacity for the currently selected layer. You can add, hide/show, and delete layers. Layers actions menu gives you lots of additional options for editing or manipulating your layers.

You can export your work as an image and as a time-lapse video.

Adobe Fresco is available on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Windows.

What’s new in version 4.2 (December 2022 Release):

  • Apply thicker oil paint with live brushes (iPad, iPhone, and Windows).
