BlenderBIM Add-on is a free and open-source add-on that provides OpenBIM authoring capabilities to Blender. Experience rapid free-form and parametric modeling in Blender. Create data-rich IFC4 data to future-proof your BIM data and integrate with the rest of the OpenBIM ecosystem. BlenderBIM is packaged as a Blender add-on, so installation is the same as any other Blender add-on.
Blender and the BlenderBIM Add-on are free software. There aren’t licensing fees or vendor lock-in. Blender has a thriving community. The BlenderBIM Add-on is built by volunteers on the IfcOpenShell project.
Note: BlenderBIM Add-on is under active development, and changes very fast. It is still alpha software.
BlenderBIM and Revit comparison
Revit is currently the most common BIM authoring tool by marketshare. Despite this, it is not necessarily the most powerful geometric modeling package, and nor is it necessarily the most powerful BIM data authoring tool.
-
- Geometric modeling abilities
- It would be somewhat unfair to compare Revit and Blender for modeling, as Revit has very limited modeling capabilities. However, Revit does have certain strengths.
-
- IFC authoring
- Once it becomes a priority to ensure that your BIM data is actually correctly authored so that it can be useful outside the Autodesk ecosystem, or simply last longer than 3 years after the building is built, then it’s time to look for ways to author IFC as natively as possible.
