CATIA is a CAD/CAM/CAE software package primarily used for parametric modeling and irregular shaped surface designs across industries. CATIA stands for Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application. CATIA was developed by Dassault Systems as a single platform software for CAD (computer-aided design), CAM (computer-aided manufacturing), CAE (computer-aided engineering), PLM (product lifecycle management) and 3D modeling. CAD allows 2D and 3D designs, CAM allows you to simulate manufacturing processes, and CAE allows verification through analysis of the 3D models. CATIA makes it easier to develop a product from early concept to final visual experiences. It provides all necessary tools to design, analyze, visualize, and manufacture a product.
CATIA software was initially developed for aerospace and automotive industries and later it found its application in the AEC industry. Gehry Technologies (by Frank Gehry) developed its software Digital Project based on the CATIA technology. CATIA is also used for surfacing, sheet metal, manufacturing, CNC programming, and other applications in various industries (product development, industrial equipment, ship building, etc.).
In CATIA, product means assembly. At first you need to customize the workbenches that you are going to use. Workbench is a specified environment consisting of set of tools. Workbenches allows users to perform the specific design task in a particular area. The main workbenches in CATIA are Part Design, Assembly Design and Sketcher under Mechanical Design category. Part Design workbench is parametric and feature based environment, in which you can create solid models by converting 2D diagram to 3D diagram. Sketcher module contains tools which you can use to draw a 2D diagram. Assembly Design workbench is used to assemble the components using the assembly constraints, to assemble total parts into one part. The other basic workbenches are: Wireframe and Surface Design, to create wireframe and surface models; Sheet Metal Design, to modify sheet metal parts; Sheet Metal Production, to perform validation checks; and Drafting, for the documentation of parts or the assemblies created earlier in the form of drawing views and their detailing.
The first version of CATIA was launched in 1981 by Dassault Systems, the company that still owns and develops the software. Initially it was a 3D CAD application, later it got CAM and CAE functionalities, evolved and became a full software package for entire product development lifecycle across many industries.
