formZ free is a free 3D modeling and 3D printing software that provides sun studies, real time rendering effects, sectioning and dimensions. It has a much more simplified toolset compared to paid versions formZ jr and formZ pro.

formZ is a hybrid multi-personality modeling tool. It has a polygon mesh type of modeling (like SketchUp), it has NURBS modeling (like Rhino), it has surface subdivision modeling (that you can see in a lot of programs, like Maya and 3DS Max), it has smooth ACIS based modeling which is more for a product design stuff and complex roundings, and also has some parametric driven geometry. formZ combines different 3D modeling technologies so you can work on different types of geometry.

formZ comes in 3 flavors: pro, junior and free. formZ pro includes all the modeling tools and features available for modeling, rendering, animation and layout. formZ jr is a lighter version with about half the tools at about half the cost. formZ free is a smaller subset of tools and it’s completely free with no restrictions for professional, academic or home use. formZ contains a modeling environment which is three-dimensional and a drafting environment which is two-dimensional. Each of which has its own set of tools and windows. The screen layout in the modeling and drafting environments are very similar to each other.

form•Z free integrations

Supported formats

form•Z free supports import of SKP (SketchUp native file format), KMZ, DWG, DXF, DAE, OBJ, SAT, STEP and STL files. You can export SKP, DWG, DXF, SAT, STEP, DAE, and STL for 3D printing.

What’s new in version 9:

  • Project files format change. Project files (.fmz, .fml) are not the same format as form•Z v8 files, which allowed for some significant improvements.
  • Save form•Z v9 file to a previous version. Use the “Save a Copy as” feature to save a file to a previous version.
  • Redesigned the tool docks. A main application window that uses screen space much more efficiently and adjusts dynamically when resized. The palettes that display project contents can be combined to save screen space.
  • Reference Files to make your workflow more efficient. Reference Files are simply data from project files displayed inside another project.
  • Modeling improvements. Non planar facetted surface objects are no longer treated as Wire objects (consistent with classic versions of form•Z). Components use the new instance engine which makes them far more efficient.
  • Tools improvements. Improvements to Reshape tool, Point Disturb, Mass properties tool, Modeling Text tool, Transformation tools. The new Rectangular Array tool and Object Symmetry tool.
  • New form•Z Draft Layout app. Combines the features of the classic form•Z Drafting environment (v6 and earlier) and the layout environment of form•Z 7/8.
  • Python scripting. FSL (form•Z script language) has been replaced by Python scripting for formZ.
