Mandelbulb 3D (MB3D) is a free app that allows you to generate and render 3D fractal images based on the principles of the Mandelbulb fractal. It was developed by Jesse and Fractal Forums contributors, based on the Mandelbulb work of Daniel White and Paul Nylander. The software offers a rich 3D rendering environment with various effects and allows fine control over imaging. After a period of inactivity, the software is now being updated by Andreas Maschke, the developer of the JWildfire app. MB3D has a global user base and online communities on Deviant Art and Facebook. Although designed for Windows, it can also be used on a Mac with a Windows emulator like Wine or Parallels.

Mandelbulb fractal. The Mandelbulb is a three-dimensional fractal object, an extension of the two-dimensional Mandelbrot set, which was popularized by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot. Discovered by Daniel White and Paul Nylander, the Mandelbulb was created by projecting the Mandelbrot set into three dimensions using a spherical coordinate system. This reveals the infinite complexity of the Mandelbrot set in a fuller magnitude. The Mandelbulb, like the Mandelbrot set, embodies principles of deterministic chaos and arises from the simple formula Z = Z² + C.

Key features

  • Fractal generation: Mandelbulb 3D is capable of formulating a multitude of nonlinear equations into diverse fractal objects.
  • Detailed rendering: The software provides a rendering environment with effects such as lighting, color, depth-of-field, and more, enabling users to have granular control over the final image.
  • Active user community: Mandelbulb 3D has a global community of users who share their creations, exchange fractal formulas, and provide helpful tips on various platforms.
  • Ease of use: Despite the complex capabilities, Mandelbulb 3D is designed to be user-friendly with numerous online tutorials available to guide users.
  • Continual development: The software is being actively developed by Andreas Maschke, ensuring regular updates and improvements to its features and capabilities.

Integration

While Mandelbulb 3D doesn’t directly support rendering 3D models (like OBJ files), it can import and export 3D data. It can convert 3D file formats to 2D heightmaps for use with fractal formulas, allowing users to incorporate 3D data from other software into their fractal designs, and export 3D data as a stack of 2D images, a mesh, or a point cloud. Then you can import this data into Blender or other software.

Typical workflow

In Mandelbulb 3D, the creative process begins with either loading a preset or initiating a new fractal design. Users then adjust various parameters and navigate through the 3D space to discover captivating views. Once a desirable view is found, users can further refine the image by adjusting lighting, color, and other settings. The final step in the workflow is to generate a high-quality render of the fractal.
