Speckle is a fully open-source platform for 3D data that enables instant interoperability between AEC authoring software. Simultaneously, it opens up that data for automation and online collaboration. Easily exchange geometry and data between CAD/BIM, parametric design or custom tools. Speckle targets architects, designers and engineers.

Speckle consists of several parts:

  • Speckle Web App. Manage data from your web browser, includes streams and a 3D model viewer.
  • Connectors. Plugins for various AEC software, allow you to send/receive data to/from your Speckle server.
  • Speckle Manager. Desktop app to handle accounts and connectors on your local computer.

Speckle is open-source, which means that any person or company can self-host the whole platform and use it for free. Speckle is a generally available service that anyone can use for free at speckle.xyz. There are no limitations, users get access to all connectors and all features of Speckle. It also offers custom enterprise plans for organisations looking to host their private instances of Speckle.

Speckle integrations

Plugins

Speckle integrates with CAD and BIM software via native plugins called connectors. Speckle currently integrates with various BIM/CAD software, gaming engines, as well as GIS and 3D modeling software, etc. But the developers’ ambition is to create a vendor agnostic ecosystem – that’s why they’re developing connectors for Revit, Rhino, Dynamo, Grasshopper, ETABS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SketchUp, Excel, Archicad, Navisworks, Unreal, Unity as well as QGIS, ArcGIS, Blender, Power BI, TopSolid, SAFE, CSIBridge, SAP2000, MicroStation, OpenBuildings, OpenRail, OpenRoads, Tekla Structures.

Typical workflow

  1. Data exchange: Two people exchange data in real time from the comfort of their authoring software. This could be any software that is compatible with Speckle.
  2. Data transformation: Speckle transforms the data exchange process, which used to involve tedious, error prone tasks such as custom exports and email attachments, into a seamless and instantaneous experience.
  3. Real-time 3D comments: Users can make real-time 3D comments on the data. This feature is game changer for reviewing 3D data in a browser.
  4. Collaboration: The entire process is collaborative and does not require any desktop software. It can even be done on a tablet while commuting.
