The Wild is a virtual and augmented reality platform to support multiple areas of the design process with internal and external collaborators and clients. It easily plugs into your current Autodesk Ecosystem (Revit and BIM 360) as well as SketchUp, making bringing your model into VR for a design review, virtual walk-through, or client presentation quick and repeatable.

Architects, interior designers and creatives love The Wild because it allows them to interact with their environment and add models, imagery, browsers, and videos from their asset library. The Wild is ideal for charrettes and early to mid-stage design as it provides a place where teams can present, collaborate, and review projects.

The Wild is a place where everyone can experience the space together before construction has started. Your team can experience projects together and make faster more informed decisions. The Wild provides an easy way to eliminate design flaws and mitigate costly clashes before construction. Construction issues (like failed ADA clearance, an inaccessible maintenance hatch or a hidden pipe collision) can lead to costly problem solving down the line.

When you review your BIM model you can explore model data, make accurate measurements, and toggle layer visibility. Review prototypes as a scale model, or from human scale one-to-one. Meet with other stakeholders and collaborate in real time, like you are on the site, or leave a comment for later.

The Wild offers a free trial that comes with full toolset and integration functionality. Several pricing options are available: Basic (for smaller design teams), Standard (for mid-sized teams), Premium (for design leaders and BIM professionals), and Enterprise.

The Wild can be accessed via VR, AR (iOS), and desktop (Windows and macOS). A VR headset (Oculus Quest 2 – Meta Quest 2, HTC Vive Pro, Oculus Rift S) is needed for editing objects in The Wild. All content in The Wild is cloud-based. You can download The Wild app to a mobile device and view your model in context using AR.

The Wild was introduced by Wild Technology in 2017. The vision was to provide the next generation of collaboration for AEC teams by leveraging XR (augmented and virtual reality). In March 2022, The Wild was acquired by Autodesk.

In February 2021, The Wild acquired Prospect by Iris VR. Prospect is also a VR collaboration tool for AEC. Together both of these products span the entire design-to-construction spectrum with The Wild focusing primarily on early stage design and collaboration and Prospect for later stage coordination and construction.

The Wild integrations

Plugins

The Wild has direct plug-ins with Revit and BIM 360.

Supported formats

The Wild supports a number of different file types: 3D filetypes (FBX, OBJ, 3DS, glTF, GLB, DAE, STL, and SKP), images and video files.

CDE integrations

The Wild is integrated with BIM 360 through the plugin.

Typical workflow:

Typical workflow is pushing a model into The Wild via one of the plug-ins after model has been optimized for VR experience and key focus areas.

What’s new in version 1.17.20:

  • Easier navigation. Teleport and rotate from your tool hand at any time in VR.
  • Grab tool settings. Change grid, angle, axis, and surface snapping settings with the Grab tool for more controlled movement. These settings were formerly on the workshop table.
  • VR library recents. A new “For You” tab makes it easier to get to spaces you’ve recently created, visited, or had shared with you.
  • Lighter, brighter Quest Home. The landing space on Quest is brightened for a more pleasant welcome.
  • Toggleable tooltips. Turn on or off your controller tooltips in VR Settings.
  • VR Handedness. Specify your default tool hand in settings — no more accidentally selecting a tool with the wrong hand.
  • Other improvements.

About Autodesk

Autodesk is a pioneer in 3D design, engineering and digital entertainment software. Though best known for its flagship product, AutoCAD, it has developed a vast range of software for the design, engineering and entertainment industries.

Autodesk was founded in 1982 by John Walker and 12 other like-minded individuals. The company launched their first original product AutoCAD that same year. Autodesk has since expanded upon a number of non AutoCAD-based products as well, including parametric BIM application Revit and 3D CAD modelling software Inventor. In recent years, Autodesk has made the move towards mobile and cloud-based applications including Fusion 360 and AutoCAD 360. Autodesk has expanded its presence in the maker community with acquisitions like Instructables and Pixlr.

Autodesk is more than just its products or its acquisitions. It had an impact on everything from education to the job sector and even on business sustainability and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future.
