PIM (Project Information Management)

Project Information Management (PIM) refers to the systematic organization, storage, and retrieval of all project-related information, including documents, emails, submittals, and RFIs, to ensure data integrity, accessibility, and efficient information flow throughout the project lifecycle. This practice aims to support informed decision-making and maintain comprehensive records of all project activities.

The term PIM was introduced in the early 2000s with the advent of specialized software designed to handle the increasing volume and complexity of project information in AEC in other industries.

Significant for AEC. Although PIM is a broad concept applicable to any industry where managing large volumes of project-related information is critical, it has become particularly significant in the AEC industry due to the complexity and collaborative nature of construction projects, which involve extensive documentation, communication, and data management needs.

Difference between PM and PIM. In the AEC industry, Project Management (PM) focuses on planning, executing, and closing projects by managing tasks, resources, and timelines to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion, using tools like Gantt charts and PM software. Project Information Management (PIM), on the other hand, centers on organizing, storing, and retrieving all project-related information, ensuring data integrity and accessibility through document management systems and PIM software.

While PM manages the overall project lifecycle, PIM ensures all project documentation and communication are systematically handled and easily accessible.
