Grasshopper for Rhino is an add-in and a node-based algorithm editor that enables you to create your own parametric system. It allows users to define logical relationships between multiple design parameters that define a Parametric Model. Parametric model is a model wherein the parts of a design relate and change in a coordinated way as defined by the various Parameters and Dependencies stated by the user. With Grasshopper you are not forced to use the parameters that traditional CAD modelers give to you.

In addition to Grasshopper being a parametric modeling environment, it also belongs to the paradigm of visual programming. Visual programming is really any programming language that allows users to create programs by manipulating program elements graphically rather than by specifying them textually.

So Grasshopper is a graphical algorithm editor for generative parametric modeling of architectural form without any knowledge of programming and scripting. Architecture faculties are teaching Grasshopper to their students because it is a very nice way to teach them geometry, math and the logic of programming.

Grasshopper was created by David Rutten, a computer scientist and architect, who wanted to write a visual scripting interface that would tell Rhino what to do. He has been developing Grasshopper for Robert McNeel & Associates, a US company founded in 1980 which is developer of Rhino software.

Note: Grasshopper is integrated in Rhino 6, and does not need to be installed as a plugin since then. This version of Grasshopper is the last standalone version that you need to download and install as a plugin for Rhino 5.
