RIB CostX (formerly iTWO costX and CostX) is an estimating software that enables automatic and manual takeoffs from BIM and CAD files, scans, and PDFs. It allows users to create estimates, takeoffs, cost plans, bills of quantities or quotes and output them to reports. The software is used by BIM managers, quantity surveyors, builders (commercial and residential), subcontractors (walls and ceilings, flooring, roofing, landscaping, structural steel, shopfitting and interiors, concrete and masonry…), and estimators.

5D BIM functionality. RIB CostX integrates 2D and 3D drawings with 5D BIM functionality, enabling users to extract object properties and generate automatic quantities from BIM models. It offers model navigation tools, transparent mode for hidden objects, and filtering through the Model Tree. Features include Live Linking, auto-revisioning, extensive rate library support, multi-level cost breakdowns, subcontractor pricing comparisons, customizable reporting, and carbon accounting to track and reduce environmental impact.

RIB CostX integration. RIB CostX supports both 2D and 3D/BIM formats, including RVT (Revit), IFC, DWF, SKP (SketchUp), DWG, PDFs, and even scanned images and sketches. By supporting both vector-based and raster files, RIB CostX ensures users can accurately measure across projects, whether they involve detailed BIM models or simple 2D drawings.

RIB CostX plans. RIB CostX offers three configurations. CostX Complete includes 2D and 3D/BIM takeoff, auto-revisioning, live-linked estimating spreadsheets, professional reports, subcontractor comparison, embodied carbon tracking, cloud functionality, and multi-tab features. CostX Core provides essential tools like 2D takeoff, live-linked spreadsheets, reports, subcontractor comparison, and carbon tracking. CostX Quantity supports 2D and 3D/BIM takeoff with auto-revisioning. Additionally, CostXL links with Excel, while CostX Viewer and CostX Educational are free versions for viewing files and educational use. CostX can be deployed in the cloud or networked environments.

Summary. RIB CostX provides a unified platform that integrates takeoff, estimating, and carbon tracking, addressing the inefficiencies of traditional software. It supports both 2D and BIM-based quantity takeoffs and estimating, with live-linked data to optimize project costs. As a 5D BIM software, RIB CostX enhances cost estimate accuracy by embedding a cost layer into the 3D model and allowing real-time updates when design changes occur.

Typical workflow

This workflow for RIB CostX outlines an approach to extract, verify, and estimate quantities from BIM files.

  1. Project setup and import: Install and configure RIB CostX, set up a new project, and import BIM files. Map BIM properties to capture necessary elements, and manually verify and link 2D and 3D views.
  2. Takeoff and estimation: Use advanced 2D and 3D takeoff tools to measure and capture dimensions. Establish live links between dimension views and workbooks, apply rates to quantities, and generate detailed estimates and reports.
  3. Review and handoff: Conduct a final review of all quantities, rates, and estimates. Manage comparisons and revisions, obtain stakeholder approval, and compile documentation for project handoff.
