iTWO costX (formerly CostX) is an estimating software that allows you to perform automatic and manual takeoffs. It supports both BIM and CAD files, but also scans and PDFs. You can create estimates, automatic and manual takeoffs, cost plans, bills of quantities or quotes and output them to reports. iTWO costX can be used by BIM managers, quantity surveyors, builders (commercial and residential), subcontractors (walls and ceilings, flooring, roofing, landscaping, structural steel, shopfitting and interiors, concrete and masonry…) and estimators.

iTWO costX provides 5D BIM functionality which is future of estimating. When you load BIM model, you can extract object properties and generate automatic quantities from the model. To navigate in the model, you can zoom, rotate and pan around, the Eye function can be used to walk through the building. The model can be set to transparent mode, which allows you to view hidden objects within the model. Model tree allows you to filter the view and isolate specific components. You can explore individual object properties or open Schedule to see all properties for all displayed objects.

To directly extract quantities from your BIM file into iTWO costX there are different methods available depending on your preference. The quickest way to get quantities is to use one of in-built templates. Alternatively you can create customized model maps for your BIM file simply by dragging and dropping to define any combination of model properties that you wish to import. More advanced users can take advantage of functions available in the Expression editor, to create highly customized takeoff. You can manually measure 3D models and verify that all quantities are correct. To ensure nothing is missed, you can easily link together 2D and 3D views of the model to create a drawing set. Objects measured in one will automatically be highlighted across both set of drawings. Additional measurements can also be taken from associated drawings using advanced 2D takeoff functionality to make the most of available information. The dimension view is live linked to advanced spreadsheet based workbooks. To apply rates to your quantities, you can add them manually or use live links to access your in-built rate libraries that can be developed over time. The live links between the rate libraries, workbook and the dimension view allow you to create a standard template so when a new BIM file is loaded in, the quantities can be automatically priced in a workbook. This allows you to quickly generate the basis of a complete estimate.

If you receive the revised model you can use the comparison tool to show the changes that designer has made and also use the revision tool to automatically update the takeoff quantities from the new model.

iTWO costX supports RVT, IFC, DWFx, CPIXML and SKP files which can be exported from Revit, ArchiCAD, Micostation, Tekla, SketchUp and most other major design packages.

iTWO costX is available in a variety of configurations and feature levels. There are four main products: iTWO costX, iTWO costX 2D, iTWO costX takeoff and iTWO costX takeoff 2D. There is also iTWO costXL, which works with any network product from the main iTWO costX range, creating a link between that and your Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Also there are two free products: iTWO costX viewer (open iTWO costX files and view them, without making changes) and iTWO costX educational (educational version for eligible lecturers and students).

iTWO costX was initially released in 2004 by Exactal, and under name CostX. Exactal was acquired by RIB Software in 2018. In mid-2020, CostX changed name to iTWO costX.

About iTWO

iTWO is set of products that enhance construction productivity. Besides iTWO costX estimating software, it includes cloud solutions iTWO benchmark (for benchmarking and conceptual estimating) and iTWO cx (for intelligent collaboration and control). All three products are integrated as part of MTWO Complete Construction Cloud, that is a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution for iTWO, powered by Microsoft Azure.

iTWO creates the new working method that integrates 5D virtual construction into physical construction from end to end. iTWO innovates 5D BIM technology that connects 3D model with project time (4D) and cost (5D) optimization. It extends the application of BIM technology from the design phase to the entire spectrum of the construction process including visualized project planning, execution and finance management, which propels big construction project much greener, faster, cheaper and safer.

About 5D BIM

5D BIM is one of the dimensions of BIM that brings benefits to cost managers – whether they’re estimators or quantity surveyors. 5D BIM is about estimation and cost analysis, and it includes cost planning (how much?) and quantity take-off (how many?). You add 4th dimension to your building information model when you add scheduling data to different model components (4D BIM is about scheduling, time and construction). 5D BIM is the next step – you produce accurate cost estimates from the components of the building information model. With these 4th and 5th dimensions added, you can track predicted and actual spend over the course of your project, which is really useful for monthly cost reporting and budgeting.

As 5D BIM refers to a particular way of linking data to a building information model, the quality of the cost estimate is directly linked to the quality of produced model. Not everything in a building information model is going to be right. So BIM managers can get quantities based on model components, but cost managers (estimators or quantity surveyors) are essential for validation. In a BIM process, they are engaged right from the outset and are an equal player in the project team. Quantity surveyors can take quantities directly from design authoring software or they can use specialized software for 5D BIM which are more efficient options.
