Topologic allows architects and engineers to create topologically-connected three-dimensional conceptual building models. Topologic helps you think about your building not only as an assembly of physical components, but as a logical, spatial, and hierarchical configuration. Once you have built and connected a robust spatial model with Topologic, this can be interfaced with your choice of analysis and simulation engine. Topologic includes a software module, TopologicEnergy, that illustrates how you can connect Topologic to EnergyPlus and OpenStudio to analyse the thermal performance of a building.

The goal of the Topologic toolkit is to support the creation of the lightest, most understandable conceptual models of architectural topology. The formal language of topology is well-matched to the data input requirements for applications such as energy simulation and structural analysis. In addition, the ease with which these lightweight topological models can be modified encourages design exploration and performance simulation at the conceptual design phase.

Topologic allows you to build conceptually connected geometries that have topologies in them. Topologic concerns itself more with Topology rather than Geometry. However, every topology in Topologic has an associated geometry.

Topologic is based on the concept of non-manifold topology. Topologic offers the ability to think spatially, topologically and conceptually about a design project. Topologic is also tightly coupled with EnergyPlus for energy analysis within Dynamo and with Project Refinery. Thus, Topologic offers the possibility of multi-domain, multi-objective optimization where the involved domains go beyond traditional building performance.

Works with Dynamo

Topologic works within Dynamo 2.x (Sandbox/Revit) or newer in Microsoft Windows OS. You can integrate workflows using nodes from Dynamo, Topologic, and other third-party packages. Topologic is installed automatically as a thrid-party package in Dynamo. After installation, launch Dynamo and you can see Topologic in the menu on the left.

While we recommend using Topologic for building, editing and querying consistent and robust topological entities, you are not locked into using Topologic exclusively. You can use regular Dynamo geometric entities and convert them to Topologic entities by using the Topology.ByGeometry constructor node.

Topologic entities are not rendered to the view. If you wish to view any Topologic entity, you can convert it to a Dynamo geometry by using the Topology.Geometry node.

Below is a mapping between Dynamo geometries and Topologic topologies:

Dynamo Topologic
List Cluster
(Group of interconnected solid) CellComplex
Solid Cell
Mesh (or any open geometry) Shell
Surface Face
Polycurve Wire
Curve/Line Edge
Point Vertex

The installers are split into four:

  • TopologicDynamo: installs Topologic as a Dynamo package. There is no longer a need to import the DLL files.
  • TopologicGH: installs Topologic for Grasshopper.
  • TopologicNET: installs Topologic as a stand-alone C++ and/or .NET library. This can be used with other software environments.
  • TopologicBHoM: provides an integration between Topologic and BHoM (https://bhom.xyz/).

About Topologic

Topologic is the result of a research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust (Project Number RPG2016-016), led by Dr. Wassim Jabi, in collaboration with Prof. Robert Aish (UCL), Dr. Simon Lannon, Dr. Aikaterini Chatzivasileiadi, and Dr. Nicholas Mario Wardhana. Dr. Wardhana holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and is the software developer on the project. The software development work is being conducted at Cardiff University in collaboration with UCL. Topologic is based on initial research into the application of non-manifold topology to architectural modelling by Prof. Aish. TopologicEnergy is based on the DSOS software developed previously by Dr. Wassim Jabi.
