KeyShot is a 3D rendering and animation software that provides real-time ray tracing and a variety of material and lighting options. Used by design professionals and independent 3D artists, it is suitable for many industries including industrial design, marketing, engineering, entertainment, automotive, architecture, jewelry and packaging.

Drag-and-drop based workflow makes KeyShot easy to learn. Materials, environments, backplates and more are easily applied to the scene from the library. Real-time rendering capability allows you to see everything as it happens. Every change for materials and lighting to cameras and animation is seen instantly.

KeyShot directly imports over 40 different 3D file formats on both Mac and PC. It provides plug-in integration with major 3D and CAD applications like 3DS Max, Maya, Revit, Cinema 4D, Rhino, SketchUp, Creo, SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and more. This enables fast data transfer and continuous model updates through live linking.

KeyShot operates side by side your 3D modelling application. It is the real-time ray tracing application that uses a physically correct render engine based on scientific research in the areas of scientifically accurate material representation and global illumination.

KeyShot integrations

Rather than putting KeyShot inside the 3D modelling software, it provides a more flexible approach with three levels of integration to import and render your design: plugins, direct import and LiveLinking.

Plugins

The plugins extends the functionality between KeyShot and the 3D modeling application. The plugins developed by Luxion include 3DS Max, Maya, Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Cinema 4D, NX, PTC Creo, Onshape, SOLIDWORKS, Fusion 360, Substance Painter, VStitcher.

Third party plugins developed by Luxion’s partners include 3D Systems, Alibre Design, Deadline, Esko Studio, IronCAD, JewelCAD Pro, MegaCAD, Solid Edge, solidThinking, Spaceclaim, ZBrush, ZW3D.

LiveLinking™

The plugins also allow Luxion’s LiveLinking technology to establish a link between your 3D modeling software and KeyShot. After the initial transfer to KeyShot, you can continue to work in the 3D modeling application. Update your designs in KeyShot with the simple push of a button, at any time.

Supported formats

KeyShot directly imports over 40 different 3D file formats from more than 20 3D modeling applications with no plugin required.

Typical workflow:

Download and install KeyShot: Download the appropriate version of KeyShot for your operating system (Windows or macOS).
Import your 3D model: Bring in your 3D model. KeyShot supports various file formats, including OBJ, FBX, STL, and more.
Set up the scene: Use the camera controls to position and adjust the view of your model. You can pan, zoom, and orbit around your scene.
Apply materials: Drag and drop materials onto your model from the Material Library to apply them. Customize material properties such as color, texture, and reflectivity using the Material tab.
Set up lighting: Use the Environment tab to choose a lighting setup. You can adjust the environment, add lights, and control their properties. Consider using HDRI image (pre-loaded or your own) for realistic lighting.
Configure camera and render settings: Fine-tune camera settings like focal length, depth of field, and field of view for the desired visual effect. Adjust the render settings, including resolution, quality, and output format.
Preview and final render: Use the real-time preview to see how changes affect your scene instantly. When satisfied with the setup, initiate the final render.
Save or export: Save your KeyShot project (.ksp) so you can make future edits if needed. Export the final render in your desired format (JPEG, PNG, etc.).
Explore advanced features: Explore the timeline and animation features if you want to create animated sequences, and other advanced features, such as image styles and post-processing effects.

New Color features: Individual colors are instances within KeyShot, and more control over the colors in your scene.
ACES: Addition of ACES as an Image Transform option to improve the color accuracy of your renderings.
Solo Mode: Affect Lights and Objects independently to easily focus on specific parts of your scene.

360° Views in KeyShot Web Viewer: More interactive and immersive presentations of your 3D models.
3D Paint: The pressure sensitivity feature for more realistic and detailed textures.
GPU & CPU parity: Ensures that your renderings will look consistent regardless of whether you’re using a CPU or GPU.

What’s new in version 2023:

Scene templates: Save preset environments, cameras, image styles, etc. as templates for efficiency and consistency.
Coloro color library: Automatic color optimizing and Coloro integration enhance color accuracy across computers.
KeyShot Web Viewer: Platform to share scenes with others (who don’t have KeyShot), offers faster load times, a new image gallery, better mobile optimization, and a new AR model for iOS devices.
Other improvements: Improved animations, open-source EXR option for rendering layers, new Material Graph nodes, and digital twin fabric materials.
