Microsoft Project Professional is standard project management and planning software with main purpose of storing and using data related to a particular project. It enables teams to analyze resources, budgets and timelines. Microsoft Project is based on a scheduling engine. In order for the Microsoft Project to assist you in project management you have to provide it with all the details of your plan.

Microsoft Project is useful both for project managers and for anybody else who really has a big task or project dropped upon them. The idea is that you sit down and think about it very carefully once and then the software tells you when things are happening and spits out a schedule for you and tells you if you’re going to miss deadlines and helps you to organize things.

You can use Microsoft Project in a combination with Revit and Navisworks to create a 4D schedule. At first, you need to export Revit file to Navisworks. Then you use Microsoft Project file in Navisworks. You open NWC file exported from Revit and link in Microsoft Project file.

About Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project is a suite of project management solutions that includes both cloud-based and on-premises applications.

Microsoft Project was an on-premises application that kind of resembled Excel. It got a major update in 2019 when Microsoft released the cloud-based versions. The app is now called Microsoft Project for the web which is a SaaS tool that you can access at an extra cost as part of the Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) suite of apps. Microsoft Project for the web currently comes in three paid plans and you can test it out through a free trial. They are Project Plan 1 (formerly Project Online Essentials), Project Plan 3 (formerly Project Online Professional) and Project Plan 5 (formerly Project Online Premium). Since Microsoft Project is part of the Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) suite it integrates seamlessly with other Microsoft apps like Teams, Power BI, OneNote and many others.

You can still buy an on-premises version of Microsoft Project. It is available in two editions, Standard and Professional. In addition to the options contained in the Standard edition, Professional edition has features such as team collaboration and the ability to connect to Microsoft Project Server. Microsoft Project’s file format is .mpp.

About construction sequencing

A typical process of construction sequencing requires modeling software (like Revit), scheduling software (like Navisworks or Synchro 4D) and project management software (like Primavera P6 or MS Project). In typical workflow, you need to link 3D model (from Revit) and schedule data (from Primavera P6 or MS Project) into scheduling software; then link parts of the model to tasks in the schedule.

Navisworks includes Timeliner, a feature which allows you to import your schedule and add schedule simulation. Synchro 4D is made exclusively for 4D simulation and scheduling with live BIM data.
