Archicad (formerly ArchiCAD) is a BIM software tool for Mac and Windows developed by the Hungarian company Graphisoft (now part of the Nemetschek Group). It is popular in Europe, while Autodesk Revit is a software of global scope (Europe – America). Its simple and intuitive approach to BIM makes it the perfect tool for a fast and easy implementation. Conceived in the early 80’s, ArchiCAD was the first BIM software available for commercial use. Similarly to Revit, views, plans and sections are created automatically and upgrade with every change of the model.

ArchiCAD is the 64-bit software which takes advantage of all processor cores. A modeling to rendering workflow is realized with the built in CineRender Engine developed by Maxon.

Modern architecture requires the cooperation of all participants in the design process, including architects, engineers, constructors… Architects play a central role in coordinating all aspects of their design with other disciplines during the entire process of project development. ArchiCAD introduces solutions that create a bridge between different BIM models. Coordination among architects and engineers becomes an easy and automated process.

Archicad integrations

Plugins

Graphisoft developed the following add-ons to provide high level of integration:

  • RFA & RVT Geometry Exchange. Enables Archicad users to import RFA (Revit Families) as objects; to hotlink, import and export RVT geometry (Revit projects) in and out of Archicad. From Archicad 25, this add-on is part of the Archicad and doesn’t require additional plugin installation.
  • IFC Model Exchange with Archicad for Revit. A free add-in for Autodesk Revit that improves the IFC model-based and bi-directional data exchange between Archicad and Revit.
  • Rhino – Grasshopper – Archicad Toolset. Includes several tools that allows you to connect Archicad with the modeling power of Rhino and Grasshopper:
    • Grasshopper – Archicad Live Connection
    • Rhinoceros Import/Export add-ons: Rhino Importer for Archicad, Rhino Exporter for Archicad
    • Rhinoceros‐GDL Converter add-ons: GSM‐LCF exporter for Rhino 5, Rhino LCF Observer add-on for Archicad. Export a model created in Rhino, and then import it to Archicad.
  • Datasmith Exporter for Archicad. Allows you to convert and import your 3D scene directly into Unreal Engine 4.
  • Cinema 4D Exchange add-on for Archicad. Send Archicad project to Cinema 4D and take the advantage of its animation and rendering capabilities to create animation or professional images.
  • Bluebeam Connection for Archicad. Bi-directional connection with Bluebeam Revu.
  • MEP Modeler for Archicad. Model and edit 3D MEP systems and networks (ductwork, pipework, cable trays) and coordinate them within the Archicad Virtual Building.
  • Solibri Connection for Archicad. The Archicad-Solibri Connection add-on provides an instant quality check of your project. This add-on allows you to export model that automatically appear in Solibri; after making some changes in the model in Archicad, just click “Update in Solibri” to update the changed elements.

Supported formats

Archicad supports direct export to RVT (Revit), DWG, IFC, SKP (SketchUp file), 3DM (Rhino 3D model), FBX (Twinmotion), 3DS (3DStudio file) and other formats.

“RFA-RVT Geometry Exchange” add-on is built into Archicad 25. You can export RVT files directly from Archicad, and hotlink RVT models into Archicad with precise geometry and properties. Use “Import RFA as GDL Object” command to import Revit families as objects (including doors, windows and MEP equipment). There are also “Import Blocks from DXF/DWG” and “Import Rhino 3DM File as Object” commands.

CDE integrations

There are plugins for Archicad to make connection with BIM Track and Revizto common data environments.

What’s new in version 27:

Archicad 27 facilitates efficient design exploration with integrated options, accelerates attribute management in project management, and introduces tools like Distance Guides and an Intelligent Tracker for improved modeling. Archicad 27 also brings a modern GDL Editor and supports FBX file format, delivering flexibility in visualization with a native Physically Based Rendering engine.

  • Design options: Efficient management of multiple design options, enabling quick decision-making.
  • Improved project management: Faster, easier, and organized attribute management.
  • Improved tools and workflow: Includes Distance Guides for accurate placement of 3D elements, Extended Search Capabilities for finding specific items quickly, and an Intelligent Tracker that now supports multiplication and division.
  • GDL Editor: Improved with syntax highlights, editing shortcuts, and dark mode.
  • Visualization: Open rendering workflow allows users to choose their preferred visualization solution (e.g., Enscape, Twinmotion). Native support for FBX format. New, native Physically Based Rendering engine.
  • Structural workflow: Faster load generation, manual adjustment capability, and Model Compare tool.
  • MEP Modeler: Intuitive routing process and new teamwork roles.
  • Open BIM Workflow: IFC4 certification, RFA and RVT geometry exchange, and IFC Model Exchange with Revit 2024.
  • Interactive schedules: Improved formatting options.
  • Software licensing: New cloud-based solution for Archicad, BIMx, and BIMcloud SaaS in 2023.
